The hetman and Kmicic's oath

In the novel, Janusz Radziwiłł demands unconditional obedience from Kmicic before revealing his agreement with Sweden. The oath binds the protagonist to the hetman and brings him into conflict with the other officers and Oleńka1.

The banquet at Kiejdany

The prince's announcement divides those present. Wołodyjowski, the Skrzetuskis and Zagłoba refuse to submit; Radziwiłł has them imprisoned. Sienkiewicz also gives the hetman private conversations in which he explains his plans and tries to retain Kmicic's loyalty2.

Checking the history

The biography of the historical Janusz Radziwiłł and the article on the Kiejdany agreement provide separate historical references. This distinction lets readers compare political decisions with the prince's role in Kmicic's transformation.

The film role

Władysław Hańcza plays Janusz Radziwiłł in Hoffman's adaptation3. His profile describes his participation in the film.
